The Chocolate War DQ’s Chapters 20-30 Infante 2009-10
1. Why is it cool to be in the Vigils? They have control over people using "psychological warfare" and have power over what people can or cannot do.
2. Obie obviously does not like Archie or being in the Vigils. Why does he stay? He stays so he can still have power and not have to worry about watching his back.
3. Brother Leon says sales are down because of apathy. Is that true? No, some of it has to do with assignments given out by the Vigils and how Brother Leon treats his kids.
4. Is trying to get the students to sell chocolates just a game? Why or why not? Yes, in a way i believe he does because he is so worried about roll call and who is doing their part.
5. Did Jerry become a symbol to other students? Yes, because he stood up for what he believed in.
6. Who or what gives the Vigils such power? Mainly "psychological Warfare" and them knowing how to use it good.
7. Who or what in your life gives you the courage to stand up for yourself? Who do you wish encouraged you? Why? My dad and i'm glad he did, because he taught me how to be a man and stand up to rotten kids.
8. Carter punches Rollo when he talks back to Archie. Why does he do this? He is trying to prove a point that nobody can stand up to the Vigils.
9. Is the quote, “All schools have animals” true? Yes, there are always trouble makers wherever you go even besides school.
10. How would the dynamics at Trinity change if it was a co-ed school? They would have the public as a whole and one group may not be the big baddest one.
11. Why do people get caught up in a herd mentality? Often times due to peer pressure and it usually gets to the weak people.
12. “Funny – someone does violence to you but you’re the one who has to hide, as if you’re the criminal.” Explain this quote. Is this true in real life? Give examples. Yes, people are treated wrong and are scared to fight back and have to hide and theres alot of instances this happens like men beating on women.
13. What is the difference between a spirit of brotherhood and what the boys at Trinity have? Brotherhood can be a nice group who does good for people, but for the Trinity people, they have to deal with the Vigils and mean bullies.
14. Did Jerry have to go to the field to fight? No, but in a way he wanted to stand up for himself and not back down like a whimp.
15. What would you have done in Jerry’s situation? Same thing
16. To what lengths would you go to stand up for something? Fighting or at the least making an arguement out of the situation.
17. Silence = consent. What does that mean? Meaning if your silent your keeping to yourself which that's what consent means.
18. How does the ending feel to you? In a way i'm having mixed feelings good and bad after all that has happened throughout the story.
19. Does this story leave the reader with any hope at all? Explain. In a way yes, because towards the end it shows people standing up for themselves and not everybody has to be a victim.
20. If you had to predict what happened next (after the ending of the story), what would you say happens I would say the Vigils come back into effect and stay sturdy whether it's the same or different group.
